Headache

A headache is a condition that causes pain and discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck. Headache pain can be of varying intensity such as sharp pain, dull ache or throbbing sensation. It can occur either on one side or on both sides of the head. It may also get isolate to a certain location or radiate across the head from one point. It may appear gradually or suddenly, and may last less than an hour or for several days.

Classification of headache

Headaches are generally classified as:

  1. Primary headache
  2. Secondary headache
  1. Primary headache: A primary headache is caused by problems with over activity of pain-sensitive structures in head.
  2. Secondary headaches: Headaches caused by problems elsewhere in the head or neck.

Some of these are not harmful, such as cervicogenic headache (pain arising from the neck muscles).Serious causes of secondary headaches include: meningitis, brain haemorrhage and brain tumor etc.

Primary Headache

  1. Tension headache

It is themost common type of headache. A tension headache may be mild, moderate or intense and it feels like a tight band around the head.

Causes of Tension headache: Tension headaches occur when neck and scalp muscles become tense, or contract. The muscle contractions can be a response to stress, depression, head injury, or anxiety. Some other factors such as drinking alcohol, eye strain, a cold or flu and emotional stress etc can also trigger tension headache.

  1. Cluster headache

Cluster headache (CH) is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, severe headaches on one side of the head, typically around the eye. There are often accompanying autonomic symptoms during the headache such as watery eye, runny nose and swelling around the eye and redness, typically confined to the side of the head with the pain.A cluster headache typically awakens a person from sleep one to two hours after going to bed.

Causes of Cluster headache:The exact cause of cluster headaches is unknown, but abnormalities in the hypothalamus likely play a role.

  1. Migraine headache

Migraine is a condition that causes attacks or episodes of headaches. Migraines are preceded or accompanied by sensory warning symptoms (aura), such as flashes of light, blind spots, or tingling in your arm or leg. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting or vision problems.

Causes of Migraine: Migraines may be caused by changes in the brainstem and its interactions with the trigeminal nerve, a major pain pathway.Imbalances in brain chemicals including serotonin, which helps regulate pain in nervous system also, may be involved.

Serotonin levels drop during migraine attacks. This may cause trigeminal system to release substances called neuropeptides, which travel to brain’s outer covering (meninges). The result is headache.

Headache according to ayurveda

In Ayurveda, headache is termed as shiroshool. All the painful conditions pertaining to headache are mentioned under Shiroroga(disorder of head). Sometimes a headache can also be accompanied with watering of the eyes, giddiness or bleeding from the nose or depending on the body energy (Dosha) that is aggravated.

Ardhavabhedaka is one of the Shiroroga which can be correlated with migraine having symptoms like paroxysmal unilateral (half cranial) headache sometime associated with vertigo, nausea, photopobia and phonophobia.

According to Ayurvedic principles, migraine is a Vatapittaj disorder. Aggravated vata and pitta are the main causative factors. The etiological factors have been classified as aharajanidana(dietary causes), viharajanidana (lifestyle causes), and manasikanidana (mental causes).Forexample: -Atisheetambupana (intake of excessively cold water) that causes agnimandya(low digestive power) leading to formation of ama (toxins produced during improper digestion). Amaformation due to indigestion gets deeply embedded in the physiology and causes imbalance in tridosha and prevents proper circulation of blood in the body and the brain.

So, to manage shiroshool the imbalanced doshas are to be balanced with the help of various herbs and classical ayurvedic formulations.
